After his death the title passed to a 3rd Cousin James Brydges 8th Baron Chandos of Sudeley a gt gt grandson of the 1st Baron Chandos of Sudley, English Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.

His son James Brydges, 9th Baron Chandos (1674–1744 famous as employer of Handel and friend of Alexander Pope was created Earl of Carnarvon in 1714 and Duke of Chandos in 1719). The title of Duke of Chandos became extinct in 1789 with the death of his grandson James Brydges 3rd Duke of Chandos. In 1822 the dukedom was revived in connexion with that of Buckingham.
