Notes for Richard JONES
Active 1610- 1645

Originally of Ruthin. Perhaps the father of Rees Jones. A “Ricardus Jones gen” appears in the Lay Subsidies for Ruthin between 1610 and 1629 and then in 1630 a “Richus” Jones appears in the Lay Subsidy for Llanvair but not for Ruthin. It may be that he purchased or inherited land in Derwen Llanerch from John ap Edward Griffith ap Robert, the one person who appears in the 1629 Lay Subsidy but not that for 1630. It appears difficult to trace this transaction through the Ruthin Lordship Court Rolls (WALE 3 at the National Archive) as they are missing for the perriod 1610 to 1643.

A “Richus Johnes” appears in the delayed Lay Subsidy for Llanfair granted in 1606 but collected in 1636. In the 1641 Lay Subsidy for all those in the Ruthin Hundred he is in the cluster of Llanfair inhabitants. He is also undoubtedly one of the two Ricus Jones’ in the 1645 List of Burgesses and Freeholders for the Ruthin Lordship in Derwen Llanerch township of Llanfair DC in SC/226/8 at the National Archives.

The Derwen Llanerch location means he is certainly not the “Ricus Jones Gen” of nearby Garthgynan from a family (descended from Tudor Trevor) who are easily confused with ours whose will was proved in 1660, and who appears under the Garthgynan township in the 1645 List of Burgesses and Freeholders.

He may even be the “Ricus Jones Taylor” in the list of the Jury for Ruthin Court Leet in SC 2/226/9 for 1645-7.
