Notes for Richard Bertram “Dick” ATKINSON
Came to Canada from England in 1898. His first job in Canada was working on construction for the Canadian Pacific Railway as it stretched across Canada through the Rocky Mountains. His work continued through to the Canadian National Railway between Winnipeg and Prince Albert. In 1902 he settled in Kyle, Saskatchewan raising horses and serving as the postmaster for that area. He married his first wife, Jean Tennant in 1903. In 1907 he left his postmaster job (varified by the Canadian Postmaster Collection records). They moved to Kinistino so his wife could be near her parents. There they had a daughter Margaret. He lost Jean to tuberculosis in 1910. His sister, Jane Atkinson, then came from England to help raise his daughter Margaret. Sadly, in 1913 Margaret also died of Tuberculosis. His sister Jane married Joseph Dover in 1918 remaining close to both her brother and his future family.

In 1913 he went into the garage business at first with his deceased wife's father Will Tennant. In 1921 he married the local school teach Elizabeth (Bessie) Lovell.
