Recorder of Bristol, 1812, where he was a great favourite; the Corporation placed his whole-length portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence in the Council House. Solicitor-General, 1817. Knighted, Mar. 27, 1817. M.P. for Eye, 1817-23. Attorney-General, 1819-24, in which capacity he conducted the prosecution of the Cato Street conspirators, and the Bill against Queen Caroline. Sergeant-at-law, 1824. Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas, 1824. P.C., 1824. Created Baron Gifford of St Leonards, Devon, Jan. 31, 1824. Master of the Rolls, 1824-6. Married, Apr. 6, 1816, Harriet Maria, dau. of the Rev. Edward Drewe, R. of Willand. Universally designated heir to the Lord Chancellorship, but died of cholera, Sept. 4, 1826, at Marine Parade, Dover. Father of John (1840) and George R. (1845).
