Notes for Sarah NUNNERLEY
An extract from "Segt Major J I Nunnerley - One of the 600", biography
"Before commencingto notice the military career of Sergeant Major Nunnerley, al slight digression may not be deemed wholly uninteresting. The uncle of Sergeant Major Nunnerley was the father of Miss Nunnerley, whose death and remarkable funeral formed the subjects and eloquent lesson of the following paragraph, which appeared in the pubic newspapers at the time of the sad and painful event:-"An extraordinary funeral took place at Whitchurch a few days ago, Miss Nunnerley of Wirswall, Cheshir, being interred in all her wedding clothes, even to the wreath, boots and ring. The young lady was engaged to be married to a cheese factor from London, a son of Mr R W Burgess, cheese factor, Whitchurch. The wedding was postponed owing to the illness of the young lady's Father, who died six weeks ago, the day after the ceremony was fixed. As, however, all the preperations for the wedding had been made, it was decided for it to take place quietly some three weks ago, but a day or so before the date, Miss Nunnerley herself was taken ill, and died. 'In the midst of life we are in death:' and in all cases it is better to 'set our affections on things above' for then only are we sure of sustaining no disappointment. He who bethroths us unto Himself dies not, and His bride has an inheritance of immortality in Him." -This Miss Nunnerley was the daughter of John Nunnerley, who died at Wirswall, Cheshire on the 18th of September, 1884, aged 77 years; and his beloved and affectionate daughter, the said sarah Nunnerley, also died at Wirswall, on 3rd of November, 1884 aged 23 years.
