Notes for Sir Maurice BERKELEY
Sir Maurice Berkeley was Standard Bearer to Henry VIII and Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I. The Abbey and church of Bruton were granted to Sir Maurice in 1546 and his family eventually became Lords of Stratton acquiring land in London and giving their name to Berkeley Square, Stratton Street and Bruton Street. He died in 1581 and his wives died in 1559 and 1585.
