Edward Macnaghten, Baron Macnaghten was born on 3 February 1830.

He was the son of Sir Edmund Charles Workman-Macnaghten, 2nd Bt. and Mary Anne Gwatkin

He married Frances Arabella Martin, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Samuel Martin, on 18 December 1858.2 He died on 17 February 1913 at age 83.

He was educated at Queen's University, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland.2 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1852 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).2 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1856 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).2 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1857 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.2 He was invested as a Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1880.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Antrim between 1880 and 1885.2 He held the office of Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1883.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for North Antrim between 1885 and 1887.2 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1887.2 He held the office of Lord of Appeal in Ordinary on 25 January 1887.2 He was created Baron Macnaghten, of Runkerry in County Antrim [U.K. Law Lord] on 25 January 1887.2 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1902.1 He held the office of Treasurer of Lincoln's Inn in 1907.2 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1911.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Macnaghten, of Dundarvie, co. Antrim [U.K., 1836] on 21 July 1911.4
