Notes for Elizabeth CROMWELL
2nd daughter. Mark Noble expresses the turbulent times of the 17th century from the viewpoint of Elizabeth Hampden. In spite of her great name and the prominence of her great nephew Oliver she remained a Royalist. Noble says:64

"Elizabeth lived under the reign of six sovereigns, she saw the Tudors expire in ther person of Queen Elizabeth I and the British sceptre unite in that of King James I but wrested from the hands of the impolitic King Charles I by his subjects, who established themselves into a republic, which was broken to pieces by her nephew Oliver Cromwell, who seated himself upon the Throne with the title of Protector, and peaceably bequeathed that dignity to his son Richard, her great nephew, who was soon driven again to private life by the men his father had deposed; she saw the revival of the monarchy in King Charles II. It must have been an unhappiness to her to see such great variey of religious and political beliefs amongst her nearest relations. Her father and eldest brother, Sir Henry and Sir Oliver Cromwell, knights, were orthodox and loyal; the family she allied herself to, her descendants, and several of the younger branches of her own family the Cromwells, disliked the established faith of their country and overturned the Monarchy itself."
