Sir John Dyke Acland was travelling with his wife

Sir John Dyke Acland, 16th Baronet Acland, of Columb-John, Devon, died last week in a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Bedford.

The incident happened at around 3.30pm on Friday when Sir John was travelling with his wife Lady Susan in a red Toyota Yaris along the A421, close to the Charles Wells warehouse the Morewood Centre.

A Mercedes Sprinter van had pulled over to the side of the road after breaking down and spilling oil from its engine on to the road.

Lady Susan was driving the Toyota, which is believed to have skidded on the oil and collided with the back of the van.

Both Sir John and Lady Susan were taken to Bedford Hospital, and the baronet died the following day. Lady Susan's injuries are believed to have been less serious.

Sir John was the 16th holder of the Acland Baronetcy, a title which dates back to 1644.

The family have produced a number of distinguished scientists and soldiers, as well as Sir Antony Arthur Acland, British Ambassador to the USA from 1986 to 1991.

Sir John's father Sir Richard Thomas Dyke Acland was an MP for both the Liberals and the Labour Party, and was one of the founders of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

Sir John and his wife have three children and their eldest son Dominic Dyke Acland is expected to succeed to the baronetcy.
