Herbert immigrated to Canada in 1906 to Lisgar Manitoba and became a farmer for a time before moving into the city of Winnipeg where he managed the Creamery of a large dairy. He enlisted in Lord Strathcona's Regiment as a Sgt. in WW1 and was wounded in the Battle of St. Quentins. While on leave in London he met his wife Elsie Plumb
