Notes for Dr Jonathan HODGKIN
Professor of Genetics at Oxford University.
He will become the third Hodgkin to hold a major title at the University—his first-cousin-once-removed was married to the crystallographer Professor Dorothy Hodgkin, the only British woman to win a Nobel Prize for science (in 1964); and his great-uncle, the historian Robert Hodgkin, was Provost of The Queen's College (1937–46). Dr Hodgkin's father, Sir Alan Hodgkin, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1963.
Dr Hodgkin graduated from Merton College in 1971, after gaining a first-class degree in Zoology. He was awarded his Ph.D. at Darwin College, Cambridge, in 1974, before undertaking postdoctoral work on bacterial genetics at Stanford (1975–6).
After appointments at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Dr Hodgkin became Brittingham Visiting Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin (1989–90). He was a committee member of the Genetical Society of Great Britain (1991–5), and has been on the advisory board of the Genome Sequencing Centre, St Louis, since 1992.
His current research interests include developmental and molecular genetics of the nematode C elegans, with particular reference to sex determination, cell lineage, and morphogenesis. His work also focuses on behavioural genetics and neurogenetics; natural variation; genomics and gene mapping.
Dr Hodgkin's most recent publications include `Changing styles in C elegans genetics', with R.K. Herman in Trends in Genetics 14 (1998); `Seven types of pleiotropy' in International Journal of Developmental Biology 42 (1998); and `Natural variation and copulatory plug formation in Caenorhabditis elegans' with T. Doniach in Genetics 146 (1997). He is a member of the Editorial Boards for Genes and Development and Developmental Genetics, and was on the Editorial Board for Cell (1991–4).
He became a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation in 1989, a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1990, and was elected to the Academia Europaea (1993–7).
