Mr. Hotung is the great grandson of the prominent Sir Robert Hotung. He is educated in the United States of America. He graduated Magna cum laude with B.S. in Business Administration from Menlo College in 1978, and M.I.M. from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1979.

In 1979, Mr. Hotung started his career in property management in the United States of America. He was awarded the San Francisco Historic Preservation Award in 1983 for the restoration of Edwardian Building in the Cowhollow District of San Francisco. In 1986, he expanded his business from Europe and the United States of America to Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific Region and promotes arts and culture in his spare time. He has also great interest and knowledge about artifacts and antique motor cars.

In 1995, as a co-producer with his wife, Ms. Katie Chan, they jointly produced the movie “Sea Root” and raised funds through charitable premieres to Hong Kong Baptist University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and 60 different charitable organizations. The couple was rewarded with certificates of merit by various charitable organizations and the former Chief Secretary of HKSAR, Mrs. Anson Chan, J.P. The movie was nominated for a number of awards in both Hong Kong and overseas film festivals and also acts as counseling materials in the Hospital Authority and The University of Hong Kong..

Mr. Hotung paid much effort to the preservation of historical heritage. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, the only medical sciences museum in Asia. Moreover, he contributed much towards different charitable causes over the years. He set up the Michael Eric Bosman Hotung Foundation, a charitable foundation with the mission of promoting Chinese and Western cultures and supporting academic researches, and has held a number of cultural exchange activities and academic research projects in Hong Kong, Macau, China, the United States and Europe..
