He was given the name of Leicester Curzon at birth.1 He fought in the Crimea War.1 He was Aide-de-Camp to Lord Raglan.1 He was decorated with the award of the Knight, Order of the Medjidie.1 He was Military Secretary of Ireland between 1865 and 1870.1 On 16 November 1866 his name was legally changed to Leicester Smyth by Royal Licence.1 He was decorated with the award of the Chevalier, Legion of Honour.1 He gained the rank of General in the service of the Rifle Brigade.1 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1870.1 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.).1 He was commanding officer of the Southern District in 1889.1 He held the office of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar in 1890.1
