Sir (Thomas) Hugh Bell, 2nd Baronet CB JP FSA (10 February 1844 – 29 June 1931) was mayor of Middlesbrough three times - in 1874, 1883 and 1911 - High Sheriff of Durham 1895, Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant of County Durham, Lord Lieutenant of the North Riding of Yorkshire.[1]

His friendship with the architect Philip Webb, led to three commissions in the Middlesbrough area - of Rounton Grange (demolished in 1953),[2] Red Barns House [3] and the Dorman Long office building (originally Bell Brothers Ltd) in Middlesbrough (his only commercial development).[4]

He was the son of Lowthian Bell and his wife Margaret Pattinson. He married Maria Shield on 23 April 1867 and they had two children:

Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell (1868–1926), the author, traveller, and political officer
Sir Maurice Hugh Lowthian Bell, 3rd Baronet (1871–1944)

Upon the death of his first wife on 19 April 1871, he married, secondly, Florence Eveleen Eleanor Olliffe (later Dame Florence Bell, DBE), a daughter of Sir Joseph Olliffe.

They had three children:
Mary Katherine Bell, OBE (d. 1966), who married Charles Philips Trevelyan
Hugh Lowthian Bell (1878–1926)
Florence Elsa Bell (ca. 1880–1971), who married Admiral Sir Herbert William Richmond

Dame Florence Eveleen Eleanore Bell DBE (1851 - 16 May 1930), née Olliffe, was a British writer and playwright.

The daughter of Irish-born Joseph Francis Olliffe (later Sir Joseph Olliffe) and the former Laura Cubitt, she was the second wife of 2nd Baronet Bell of Rounton Grange. They had three children:
Hugh Lowthian Bell (21 October 1878 – 2 February 1926)

Florence Elsa Bell (c. 1880 – 3 May 1971, married Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond)

Mary Katherine Bell, OBE (c. 1882 - 8 October 1966, married Charles Philips Trevelyan)

Additionally, Florence Bell was stepmother to her husband's children from his first marriage: British writer and spy Gertrude Bell (1868 – 1926) and Maurice (Sir Maurice Hugh Lowthian Bell, 3rd Baronet; 1871–1944).
In 1918 Florence Bell was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).

Dame Florence Bell died on 16 May 1930. There are no records of her on which is the United Kingdom's leading free family tree tracing website. There are also no justifiable records on the website of her second daughter, Florence Elsa Bell.[original research?]
